Day of the Dead at Glasgow Restaurant Stravaigin

Date: 29/09/2011

A Day of the Dead celebration will take place at Glasgow’s Stravaigin restaurant and cafe bar on Wednesday 2nd of November.

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos in Spanish, takes place in Mexican and Latin American communities around the world. Similar to Halloween, the tradition is based on a blend of pre-Hispanic and Catholic beliefs about all Soul’s Day on the 2nd of November each year, a day when the dead can revisit the living.

While the exact traditions change from region to region and country to country, colourful alters are built in homes and cemeteries and a gift of food or flowers presented to dead loved ones.

Day of the dead parades and festivals also celebrate lost loved ones through joyous, colourful events. Macabre skulls, flowers and skeletons are the basis of fancy dress and decorations rather than the gore and monsters associated with Halloween.

Stravaigin will recreate the look and feel of a traditional day of the dead parade inside the Gibson street restaurant for a one off evening celebration.

The night will feature Mariachi music and a make-up artist will be on site to help recreate the day of the dead look.  There will be additional special prizes for anyone in fancy dress and a competition for the most creative costume.

Upstairs, in the bar, guests will be able to sample a bowl of traditional or vegetarian chilli and bottle of Modelo Mexican beer for £7.95.

In the restaurant downstairs, an authentic four course fiesta of Mexican food over will take place. The meal costs £30pp and includes a Mexican beer. Prior booking is recommended.
