Comedy Award Winner a HIT at Charity Event

Date: 06/09/2010

Tim Minchin, the former best newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, helped a Scottish charity raise over £41,000 at a sell out event in Glasgow last Friday.

Tim performed at the annual Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland POETS lunch, at the Radisson Blue hotel in the city centre. The star, who regularly sells out concert venues across the UK with his musical comedy, played his greatest hits and some unique songs for the capacity crowd of 450 hospitality professionals.

The event was compared by Scottish comedian Tam Cowan. Guests donated money through ticket sales and auction and raffle prizes. Event sponsorship was provided by Braehead Foods, New Wave Laundries and Xpress Recruitment.

All the money will support the charity’s Scholarship programme. Last year, over 160 students and talented people at all levels in the industry were offered fully funded career changing experiences. Previous scholars have gone behind the scenes of Michelin starred kitchens, to Ivy League Cornell University, enjoyed places at Europe’s top hospitality school and learnt from managers in six star resorts in Dubai.

HIT Scotland is a charity working to raise professional aspirations across the hospitality industry. Over £2 million has been raised by HIT Scotland since the Trust’s inception in 1994.

As well as fundraising through events like the industry dinner and future events in Inverness, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, HIT Scotland is supported by big names in the industry including Wiseman Dairies, Caterer.com, Prestige Scotland, Enterprise Rent a Car, Swisscom and Brakes Fresh Ideas. In January next year, a group of HIT Scotland supporters will attempt to host Mount Kilimanjaro’s first Burns Supper.

Jacqui McMillan, General Manager of the Novotel Glasgow and chair of the HIT Scotland POETS lunch committee said, “Tim’s performance went down a storm and helped raise a fantastic amount for HIT Scotland. But the event was not just about the money. It brought likeminded professionals together with the aim of raising aspirations for Scottish hospitality.”
